Intragastric Balloon

The Gastric Balloon is an alternative to weight loss surgery that is ideal for patients seeking to lose 25 to 50 pounds. This non-surgical intragastric procedure combines a temporary device with a behavior modification program to help overweight patients maintain long-term weight loss.

How do I find a doctor to perform the procedure?

I am proud to be one of the region’s first doctors certified in the gastric balloon procedure. As with my other bariatric procedures, I am committed to you from consult through follow-up. This means I will perform your procedure as well as document your recovery and aftercare.

For more information about the procedure or to schedule an appointment, please fill out the contact form or call us at (940) 539-9105.

What is the gastric balloon procedure?

The gastric balloon procedure is a new alternative for weight loss surgery. The device used is a small silicon balloon that is inflated to reduce the amount of food your stomach can hold at any time. This intragastric procedure is temporary and does not result in any permanent surgical alteration to your digestive tract.

What’s the process?

The procedure is conducted in three phases: insertion, behavior modification, removal and follow-up.

To begin the gastric balloon procedure, I insert a small, deflated silicon balloon into your stomach, using a flexible endoscopic tube to create a direct pathway from your mouth, through your esophagus. I then fill the balloon with a sterile saline solution and remove the endoscopic tube. The balloon remains in your stomach to limit the amount of space available for food, thus enabling you to consciously eat less.

The behavior modification phase is a six-month long commitment to learning the principles of health, nutrition and exercise. You will meet with your lifestyle team at least  once a month to evaluate your progress, as well as find the motivation and support needed to build a long-term, healthy lifestyle regimen that works for you. This phase is crucial to maintaining your weight loss and achieving the health benefits associated with lower weight.

The removal and follow-up phase begins with removing the balloon from your stomach. I will again insert a flexible endoscopic tube through your mouth, down your esophagus and into your stomach. I then deflate the balloon and extract it with a small tool inserted through the tube. Finally, the tube is removed. Once the balloon has been removed, you will continue meeting with your lifestyle team to reinforce the health, nutrition and exercise habits you’ve developed.

How long does the procedure take?

The gastric balloon insertion takes less than 30 minutes and remains in the stomach for six months. However, your commitment to a full year (12 months) of follow-ups and lifestyle changes is crucial to achieve long-term weight loss success.

How soon will I begin to lose weight?

It is important to understand that the Gastric Balloon Procedure is not a diet. It is a tool to jumpstart weight loss for patients who are committed to developing a long-term healthy lifestyle. Weight loss typically occurs within the first 3 months and continues based on behavior modification.

Once the Gastric Balloon is placed into your stomach, it immediately reduces the amount of space for food, which means you will begin eating less immediately. Though you will begin seeing results quickly, you will be unable to maintain the weight loss if you do not follow through with the nutrition and exercise program created by your lifestyle team.
